An overdose that occurred yesterday evening in Carrboro was reversed by law enforcement officers with the assistance of a drug that blocks the effects of opioids.

According to a release from the Carrboro Police Department, this is the fifth successful overdose reversal since officers began carrying the drug over two years ago.

That drug is naloxone, which binds to opioid receptors in the body while reversing the effects of mental depression and respiratory failure that accompany opioid abuse.

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, over 13,000 state residents have died from unintentional drug overdoses since 1999.

The Carrboro Police Department was the first law enforcement agency in Orange County to be trained on naloxone, with other departments following suit.
