Members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office are charging a Mebane man with two felonies after he attempted to elude police in Hillsborough on Wednesday and accidentally shot himself in the process.

A release from the sheriff’s office Thursday said authorities attempted to stop Kyreh Jasan Lloyd, 28, for reckless driving on old NC Highway 86 near Arthur Minnis Road in Hillsborough. Lloyd did not stop and instead continued to evade police until reaching the Carrboro city limits. Lloyd eventually stopped near McDougal Middle School. When authorities approached the vehicle, they found Lloyd had shot himself via accidental discharge during the chase.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said according to a passenger, Lloyd’s Glock handgun went off as he was attempting to disassemble it while pulling over.

Lloyd is charged with operating a motor vehicle while fleeing law enforcement and carrying a concealed weapon. He was previously charged with carrying a concealed weapon in Orange County in October 2015. In addition, Lloyd also faces a charge of misdemeanor child abuse by discharging a firearm inside a vehicle where a child was present, driving while license revoked, failure to properly secure a child in a car seat, and finally, speeding. Lloyd was driving 70 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Lloyd received medical treatment for his gunshot wounds and was then presented to a magistrate, who placed him under a $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

At the time of Wednesday’s events, Lloyd was out on bond for two charges in early January.
