The Town of Chapel Hill has received an A-List rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project, one of 122 cities and towns worldwide to receive the highest score. It honors “bold climate action and transparency.”

“We are honored to have Chapel Hill recognized once again on the global stage for our emissions disclosure and reduction, community resilience, and environmental stewardship efforts,” said John Richardson, Community Sustainability and Resilience Manager for Chapel Hill.

The CDP surveyed more than 1,000 cities in 2022, and only 12 percent received an A rating. Among Chapel Hill’s peer towns and cities are San Francisco and Kyoto, Japan. The requirements for this rating include:

  • Conducting climate risk and vulnerability assessments
  • Completing community-wide emissions inventories and disclosing emissions information publicly through CDP-ICLEI Track
  • Setting aggressive renewable energy targets
  • Publishing plans for climate action and adaptation

“Cities on the A List have demonstrated their climate leadership through concerted and effective action and are taking three times as many mitigation and adaptation measures as non-A-List cities,” the CDP said in a release. For a full list of A-List cities, click here.
