A long-standing, historical landmark in Hillsborough continues to undergo renovations amid the pandemic.
The Colonial Inn has occupied a spot on Hillsborough’s King Street since the 1800s. The inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but in recent years, has faced dilapidation and neglect.
In January of 2018, the Colonial Inn finally changed ownership. Allied DevCorp. LLC signed the deed for $800,000 – $75,000 under the asking price.
Fast forward to 2020, with new owners investing in the inn’s restoration, renovations were initially supposed to be completed by May – but these plans were compromised in wake of the pandemic.
Despite these delays, Hillsborough Mayor Jenn Weaver said she has enjoyed watching the renovations in person and via the inn’s Facebook page.
“It looks just really beautiful,” Weaver said. “It’s very exciting to watch that progress. If you’re walking downtown, seeing it from the outside and watching that progress is really cool.”
According to Weaver, the Colonial Inn was initially planning to hold its first event in the renovated space in June. While this date was pushed back, per the inn’s Facebook page, final detail are already being added.
“They’re not far behind schedule,” Weaver said. “I expect they’ll be having any allowable events in there in just a few months.”
