Shoppers and employees at a Carrboro Food Lion experienced a frightening incident Wednesday evening when a motorist began driving their vehicle into the store.
According to the Carrboro Police Department, the event happened around 7 p.m. at the Food Lion in the 600 block of Jones Ferry Road. A Facebook video from the user Johnathan Spencer depicts a dark grey Toyota Corolla accelerating multiple times to drive over the curb and into the front of the grocery store. The person holding the camera shows the perspective of shoppers and employees from inside during the incident.

The Carrboro Police incident report said the motorist faces charges of simple assault and vandalism with a motor vehicle. According to a department spokesperson, the incident was deemed the result of a mental health crisis and the driver involved was taken to a hospital for evaluation following the attack.
Wednesday’s incident report lists an estimated $5,000 of damage to the Food Lion grocery store.
