Chapel Hill Police are once again reminding residents and visitors to the town to “keep valuable items out of sight, lock car doors and windows, and park in well-lit areas to protect from prying eyes.”

This warning comes after police reported 121 motor-vehicle breaking and entering cases since January 1, 2018. Nine of those cases being investigated occurred within the last week, according to police.

“It’s summertime, and more people are out and about. It’s easy to leave your windows rolled down to keep your car from overheating,” Chapel Hill Police chief and executive director for community safety Chris Blue said in a release. “You can do a lot to help us keep your valuables safe. A locked vehicle and no belongings left in sight can go a long way towards deterring car break-ins.”

Authorities listed laptops, purses and money among the valuables that police are advising be hidden in the trunk, glove box or under a seat. Police also cautioned residents to always lock doors and to not leave windows low enough for an individual to potentially reach their arm in and unlock the vehicle.

Anyone with information regarding the break-in cases is asked to contact Chapel Hill Police at (919) 968-2760. If you witness a break-in being committed or see anyone acting in a suspicious manner, police advise that you call 911 immediately.
