UPDATE: As of Sunday, August 21, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office officially declared the death of Ulises Guadalupe Vasquez a murder. The office is continuing its investigation.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting death of a 26-year-old man on Friday morning.

The office reportedly received calls of shots fired during the early morning hours and deputies arrived at the 200 building of the Heritage Apartments complex, which is at 405 Thomas Burke Drive. Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies found the victim in the parking lot. An update Friday afternoon identified the victim as Ulises Guadalupe Vasquez, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died on-scene despite emergency responders rendering aid.

A spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said a K-9 unit track was set up in the forest nearby Heritage Apartments, with the trail ending near Interstate 85 and investigators believing the suspect left in a vehicle. While the office is seeking further information, the shooting is believed to be an isolated incident and the community’s safety is not at threat.

While the apartment complex is just outside the town limits, Friday’s shooting is the latest in a string of unrelated gun violence around Hillsborough. In May, gunfire during a drug-deal-turned-armed-robbery left two people injured at the Gateway Village community. In June, a teenager died after being shot at Bellevue Mill Apartments off of South Nash Street. Most recently, Hillsborough Police arrested a man who is charged in connection to shots fired into a building at Cadence at Cates Creek Apartments in July.

As of Friday afternoon, Orange County Sheriff’s Office investigators are still actively pursuing leads on Vasquez’s fatal shooting. Anyone who may have information on the case or a suspect is encouraged to call Investigator Kevin Stewart at 919-245-2925.
