A Chapel Hill man has been arrested for attempted child abduction.
Police say officers responded to a report of a suspicious person just after noon on Wednesday at Montessori Academy at 1510 East Franklin Street. The man walked to the school fence and was “threatening to physically harm students.”
The man then “grabbed two students and tried to pull them over the fence,” according to police. Teachers were able to intervene and stopped the incident before the man fled the area.
Law enforcement officials say officers stopped the man at Walgreens near the school and he was taken into custody.
Police say 48-year-old Richard Donnell Mangum has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of simple assault, two misdemeanor counts of communicating threats and two felony counts of child abduction.
Police say Mangum is being held under a $40,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.
