Carrboro Police have reversed another drug overdose in the town – the seventh time an overdose has been reversed by the department since officers began carrying the overdose reversal drug naloxone in 2014.

This instance began over the weekend when officers were dispatched to a single-vehicle accident. Authorities say the driver of the vehicle was “found to be in an overdose state” and the officer administered naloxone.

The “driver’s condition was successfully reversed,” department officials wrote in a release.

Police records show one crash just before seven o’clock Saturday night on Hillsborough Road and the alleged driver, 26-year-old Blake Charles Evans, was charged with a felony count of possession of a schedule I controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while impaired.

Police recovered one gram of heroin from the vehicle, according to the arrest report.

Naloxone allows a time window for an overdose victim to receive treatment from medical professionals for a full recovery.

All law enforcement agencies in Orange County carry the overdose reversal drug. Law enforcement carrying naloxone has been an increasingly common scenario across North Carolina in recent years as the opioid epidemic has hit the Tar Heel State.

Carrboro Police ask that if “you or someone you know is found in an overdose state, please call 911 immediately and remain with the person until assistance arrives. If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out to the Orange County Health Department or to us, the police department, so that we may help in any way we can.”
