Two long-term care facilities in Orange County that experienced outbreaks this month are reporting double-digit deaths from their locations due to COVID-19.

PruittHealth – Carolina Point on Mt. Sinai Road and Signature HealthCARE in Chapel Hill are the sites of the county’s most significant outbreaks. The Orange County Health Department has not provided updates on the facilities since April 11 after four deaths were reported from PruittHealth – Carolina Point.

According to a new report from the state Department of Health and Human Services, Carolina Point reported 11 total coronavirus deaths at its facility as of Monday. The department says the nursing home is the site of 108 lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases, the second most in the state at congregate living settings.

Signature HealthCARE has reported 52 positive cases and two deaths, according to the report. NCDHHS also lists a third care facility in the county as reporting cases: Residential Services Inc. The Chapel Hill non-profit that aids those with developmental disabilities is reporting nine positive coronavirus cases.

The report does not specify whether the reported cases and deaths are strictly of residents or includes employees.

County health officials shared a messages to the public on April 9 about the likely origins of the outbreak at PruittHealth – Carolina Point. Two positive cases were reported, a health care worker and a resident who was hospitalized at Duke.

The NCDHHS report is the first of its new, twice-weekly updates on reported numbers of COVID-19 cases in long-term care facilities.

As of Tuesday, the state department reports 209 positive cases in Orange County and 14 coronavirus-related deaths.
