A UNC student died after being struck while crossing the street Monday afternoon, according to Raleigh police.

Patrick Luc Nixon, a first-year student at UNC, was using a crosswalk after being permitted by one driver to cross when another vehicle struck him, according to a report from CBS 17.

Raleigh police said the incident was reported at 5:15 p.m. on Monday at Avent Ferry Road near Gorman Street. Nixon was taken the hospital, but later died from his injuries. Police said the driver of the vehicle, identified as Gaston Jarrod Rogers, remained at the scene following the collision.

Nixon’s father told CBS 17 his son had recently decided to double-major in economics and public policy. He described him as “an awesome young man.”

Police charged Rogers with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, meaning he could face up to 150 days in jail and a fine.
