Like hundreds of universities across the country, UNC-Chapel Hill has moved its coursework online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After an extended spring break, the university moved the entirety of its classes online and encouraged students not to return to campus. Since then, UNC has also announced that summer classes will additionally be held online.

While there is currently no timetable for the return of students to campus in Chapel Hill, Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz took to social media on Tuesday morning to offer a glimpse of encouragement of the university’s timetable.

“As we end this semester,” Guskiewicz wrote on Twitter, “we are planning for the fall. We are hoping to return in mid-August but we are planning for many different scenarios.”

He concluded with the notion that the university will keep students and faculty updated.

As of Tuesday, there are 9,586 reported coronavirus cases in North Carolina along with 342 deaths associated with the virus. Orange County is reporting 209 cases and 14 deaths.

Last week, Governor Roy Cooper announced a three-step plan to reopen North Carolina. However, officials said that the state is still seeing a slight increase in cases and is currently falling short of the benchmarks the state has set to signify North Carolina’s readiness to reopen.
