For more than five decades, an iteration of the Dual Supply Co. has sat in downtown Hillsborough, available to residents in need of tools, home repair supplies and outdoor items. Soon, that run will come to an end.
The store along West King Street, which has been owned and operated by the Woods family since 1973, announced its closure by putting up a sign in the window promoting a ‘going out of business sale.’ The News & Observer reported the sign was put up on Monday, August 24 and the sale will happen until the shop closes at the end of September.
Wesley Woods bought and ran the business after working in the space when it was Western Auto. After changing the name to Dual Supply, the place’s reputation built over the years from Woods and his family’s good service. His sons, Jeffrey and Michael, worked alongside Wesley and his wife, Alice — with the brothers ultimately taking over responsibility of the hardware shop. The patriarch died in 2024 at 87 years old.
In addition to losing their father, the Woods made the decision to shrink the Dual Supply’s footprint over the last decade, with changes coming after the Woods family initially thought the store would fully move away from downtown Hillsborough. To help themselves — and to help the local business community writ large — they sold off some downtown properties previously owned by Wesley Woods. In 2024, the Town Scoop opened in what was previously the right side of the shop’s building and has quickly become a popular local spot. But another change was the opening of Woods Farm & Garden after the family bought more than three acres of property off U.S. 70 near St. Mary’s Road in 2019. Jeffrey’s son, Adam, runs the store on the site now, which primarily focuses on landscaping supplies and equipment.
Dual Supply Co. at 115 West King Street is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
