One of the two suspects facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the Christmas Day shooting of one-year-old Maleah Williams appeared in court on Tuesday.

Ramone Jamarr Aslton seemed calm before Judge James E. Hardin Jr. answering with loud, clear “Yes, sir” responses in Orange County Court on Tuesday morning. The 22-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder for allegedly shooting the infant while Williams was in her mother’s arms outside their Trinity Court Apartment as other children played outside Christmas evening.

Williams died three days later.

On Tuesday, Alston’s case was continued until September 13, when a Rule 24 hearing could be held, which is a hearing before a judge in first-degree murder cases in North Carolina. The purpose is to determine whether the state will be seeking the death penalty in the case.

Assistant District Attorney Lamar Proctor said on Tuesday that it was still too early to know what the state’s position would be regarding the death penalty in this case.

Alston and 23-year-old Pierre Je Bron Moore are currently being held without bond while facing first-degree murder charges.

A third individual, 22-year-old Shaquille Oneill Davis, was the first person to be arrested in the case but had his charges dismissed in February. Davis is being held on unrelated charges while the investigation is continuing.

Moore is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning.
