
The Christmas holiday on Wednesday, December 25 will affect several local government services around the community. Here’s a rundown of what residents can expect.
Town of Chapel Hill
Town of Chapel Hill government offices will be closed from Tuesday, December 24 through Thursday, December 26.
Residential trash collection will not be affected. Yard trimmings will not be collected on December 26 or 27 and no make-up days are scheduled. Curbside recycling will not be collected on December 25 and collections will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week. Commercial trash will not be collected on December 26 and collections will be completed by the end of the week.
Christmas trees will be collected, as long as all decorations are removed.
The Orange County Landfill and Waste & Recycling Centers will be closed on December 24 and 25. Facilities will reopen on December 26.
Chapel Hill Transit’s schedule is as follows:
- Monday, Dec 23: Local service and 420 route only (No CCX, FCX, JFX, and NU routes)
- Tuesday, Dec. 24: Sunday service
- Wednesday, Dec. 25: No service
- Thursday, Dec. 26: Sunday service; 420 route will operate
- Friday, Dec. 27: Local service and 420 route only (No CCX, FCX, JFX, and NU routes)
The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed from December 24 through December 26.
Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation facilities, including the Community Center and Pool, Hargraves Center and Homestead Aquatics Center, will be closed December 24-26.

Town of Carrboro
Town of Carrboro offices will be closed from December 24 through December 26.
Waste collection scheduled for December 25 will be moved to December 23, collection scheduled for December 26 will be moved to December 27 and collection scheduled for December 27 will be moved to Monday, December 30.
Yard waste and bulk waste will not be collected the week of December 23-27.

Town of Hillsborough
Town offices will be closed from December 24 through December 26.
Solid waste routes will not be serviced on December 24, 25 or 26. Residential solid waste collection will occur on Monday, December 23 for homes which receive service on Mondays or Tuesdays. Collection will occur on Friday, December 27 for homes which receive service on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Recycling collection will be delayed one day to December 26.
Christmas trees may be placed curbside for collection, which will follow the same schedule as yard waste collection. Trees must be removed from the stand and be free of decoration. Trees may also be brought to any of Orange County’s Waste & Recycling Centers except the facility on Bradshaw Quarry Road.

Orange County
Orange County’s government offices will be closed from December 24 through December 26.
Recycling pick-up will take place as scheduled on December 24. Pick-ups scheduled for December 25 will be collected on December 26, and all collections for the rest of the week will be delayed by one day.
Orange County Animal Services will be closed from December 24 through December 26. Animal Services asks that people call 9-1-1 for any animal-related emergency during the closure.
The Orange County Public Library in Hillsborough and the Cybrary in Carrboro will be closed from December 24 through December 26.
Orange County Public Transportation will not run from December 24 through December 26. On December 27, service will run to the county dialysis center only.
