The UNC men’s golf team finished tied for third place after four rounds of stroke play at the NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, CA on Monday afternoon and will advance to the match play portion of the competition. This is the fourth straight season Carolina will compete in NCAA match play, which involves just eight teams out of the original field of 30. Only two other programs have reached match play in four straight years under the championship’s current format.

UNC shot four-under par on Monday, tied for the best fourth round of the 15 remaining teams in the championship (the bottom 15 were cut after the third round). Dylan Menante shot three-under par in the round – the lowest by a Tar Heel in the entire championship – and was one of three members of the team to finish below par on Monday, alongside Austin Greaser and Maxwell Ford (both one-under). For the entire stroke play portion of the championship, Peter Fountain was Carolina’s highest individual finisher at two-over par.

Illinois, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Florida State, Auburn, Ohio State and Georgia Tech will join Carolina in match play. Illinois (six-under par) was the only team to finish with a total score below par after four rounds. Carolina’s total score of 11-over tied for third with Virginia. UNC will face Florida State in the match play quarterfinals, with the winner facing either Illinois or Georgia Tech.

The match play quarterfinals and semifinals will both be played on Tuesday in California, with the national championship match scheduled for Wednesday.
