Left-handed pitcher Folger Boaz, who started nine games for the Diamond Heels this year but hadn’t appeared in a game since April 9, will miss the remainder of the 2024 season with an elbow injury. Head coach Scott Forbes confirmed the news to Inside Carolina on Monday.
In Boaz’s final appearance, he lasted just 2.1 innings against South Carolina before having to be removed. It was Boaz’s first start in a mid-week role, with his previous appearance against Virginia coming only five days prior. Boaz lasted two innings in that appearance and allowed six runs. The freshman from Pilot Mountain had logged 39 total innings for UNC in 2024, posting a 3-1 record with a 5.77 earned run average. Boaz is the second starting pitcher the Tar Heels have lost for the season, after Jake Knapp – the presumed No. 1 starter going into the season – tore his UCL in January.
Jason DeCaro has assumed the top starting role for Carolina, with Shea Sprague and Aidan Haugh filling out the weekend rotation. Connor Bovair, Matthew Matthijs, Olin Johnson, Cameron Padgett and Boston Flannery have each also started games for UNC this season.
The Diamond Heels will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host Charlotte at Boshamer Stadium at 7 p.m.
