The Diamond Heels scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on their way to a 9-1 win against South Carolina at Truist Field in Charlotte Tuesday night. It’s the second straight win in the annual series for UNC.

UNC fell behind after the Gamecocks scored in the top of the first, but quickly recaptured the momentum after Gavin Gallaher launched a two-run blast to left field, putting Carolina in front 2-1. That slim lead held up until Owen Hull added insurance in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch.

The Diamond Heels blew the game open in the seventh, capitalizing on more South Carolina mistakes. After a pair of walks and a fielder’s choice, Schaffner scored on another wild pitch and Gallaher came around on a single from Hull. Yet another UNC run scored on yet another wild pitch, and a Colin Hynek double and a Tyler Howe single drove in the final two runs of the inning. Cameron Padgett retired the final six Gamecocks in order to seal the win.

Walker McDuffie earned the win out of the bullpen with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. The sophomore struck out seven Gamecock hitters on his way to his fifth victory of the season.

The Diamond Heels are now 21-4-1 on the season, and Tuesday’s result was their first win at a neutral site. UNC will return to action Friday when they visit No. 23 Notre Dame in South Bend for a three-game series. First pitch of Friday’s opening game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.
