The Diamond Heels weren’t able to finish off a series sweep of No. 2 Georgia Tech in Chapel Hill Sunday, dropping the series finale 5-2 after winning Friday and Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets led for nearly the entire game, striking quickly in the top of the first and then, after UNC tied it in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs in the third to take a 4-1 advantage. Carolina starter Folger Boaz did not make it out of the third inning.

After scoring 14 runs in Saturday’s series-clinching win, UNC’s offense went quiet for much of Sunday. Jake Schaffner and Carter French each finished with three hits, but their seven other teammates in the lineup combined for just two. A stout effort from the Carolina bullpen trio of Matthew Matthijs, Jackson Rose and Camron Seagraves kept the game close through the final innings, as Georgia Tech wouldn’t score again after notching a run in the fifth.

UNC appeared to be in position to rally against the Jackets’ Mason Patel in the bottom of the ninth, as French and Schaffner both singled and Gavin Gallaher worked a 3-0 count with nobody out. But Patel fought back to strike Gallaher out, then induced a line out from Owen Hull and a fly out from Macon Winslow to end the game and salvage the series finale for the Yellow Jackets.

Sunday’s loss snaps UNC’s five-game winning streak. The Diamond Heels are now 33-7-1 overall and 15-6 in ACC play, one game behind 16-5 Georgia Tech. Carolina will be back in action when it hosts High Point in Chapel Hill Tuesday at 6 p.m.
