After a shooting at an apartment complex on Christmas Eve, the Carrboro Police Department announced authorities arrested a suspect sought in the case.
A release from the department on Wednesday said 19-year-old Daniel Cruz Rivera was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Carolina Regional Taskforce in Durham earlier in the day. He faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault by pointing a gun, and possessing a stolen firearm — all stemming from a shooting that took place around 3 a.m. on December 24, 2023.
With its release on Wednesday, police revealed officers’ investigation into the shooting of a 19-year-old male at 200 North Carolina Highway 54, which is the address of the West End Flats apartment community. At the time, the victim was taken to UNC Hospitals for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Police said Wednesday the young adult is still recovering from those injuries.
Carrboro Police said initial attempts to locate Cruz Rivera and serve arrest warrants were unsuccessful. As of Wednesday, he is confined in the Durham County Jail and was not issued a bond by the local magistrate.
The police department encourages anyone who may have more information on the shooting from December 24 to contact Investigator E. Velazquez with Carrboro Police by calling 919-918-7413 or emailing evelazquez@carrboronc.gov.
