Orange County Approves More Than $500,000 for Community Climate Action Grant Program

Earlier in December, the Orange County Board of Commissioners approved more than $500,000 in various grants through the county’s Community Climate Action Program. Eight programs around the county will receive funding.

Three different organizations will use the money to install rooftop solar panels: Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, the Hillsborough United Church of Christ and EmPOWERment’s PEACH Apartments.

Several other organizations in the community will use the funds for sustainability needs. Orange County Schools will install a 54-panel solar pedestal with battery storage and chargers for electric vehicles. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools will change lights on its campuses to LED installations.

Club Nova in Carrboro will install gardens, a greenhouse and a terrace at its headquarters on West Main Street, and the organization Urban Sustainability Solutions will create a “green infrastructure workforce development apprenticeship program” within Orange County Schools. Finally, the local Habitat for Humanity Chapter will use the money to support its Home Preservation program, which offers repairs to homeowners in need.

The total sum of the grant is $564,085. According to the county government, more information about the next round of funding will be published in early summer 2024. To learn more about the Community Climate Action Grant Program, click here.
