The local magazine INDY Week has published its endorsements in this year’s Chapel Hill and Carrboro municipal elections.
In the Chapel Hill mayoral race, INDY Week is endorsing Jess Anderson over Adam Searing. Both are vying to replace outgoing mayor Pam Hemminger, who is stepping down from the position at the end of the year. Among other things, INDY Week praised Anderson’s work negotiating with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools for affordable summer camp spaces and securing affordable housing on the Legion Road property.
“Chapel Hill needs a leader who will listen to diverse perspectives and work collaboratively to find consensus for the good of all,” INDY Week wrote. “We think that leader would be Anderson.”
In the race for the Chapel Hill Town Council, in which 10 candidates are vying for four seats, INDY Week endorsed incumbent Amy Ryan as well as newcomers Melissa McCullough, Theodore Nollert and Erik Valera. The publication also gave an “honorable mention” to Jon Mitchell.
INDY Week also released endorsements in the crowded race for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education, in which 13 candidates are vying for four seats. The publication is endorsing just two candidates in the race: incumbent Rani Dasi and newcomer Barbara Fedders.
“We feel informed enough to endorse only two candidates for these seats,” the publication wrote.
In the upcoming Carrboro mayoral election, Barbara Foushee is running unopposed, but INDY Week endorsed her anyway.
“We’re confident that, as mayor, Foushee will continue to prioritize community engagement, expanded and inclusive economic development, and affordable housing initiatives,” it wrote.
Five candidates are running for three seats on the Carrboro Town Council. INDY Week is endorsing incumbent Eliazar Posada along with newcomers Catherine Fray and Jason Merrill. The trio have been running as a slate for the last month.

Early voting begins this week for all of Orange County’s 2023 municipal elections, as the county’s first of five early voting sites will open on Thursday, October 19. The early voting period will run through November 4, and residents will then have Election Day on Tuesday, November 7 as their final opportunity to cast their votes.
