The main campus for UNC Health’s hospital system continues to earn national recognition.
In its 2023 list of America’s Best Cancer Hospitals, Newsweek named UNC Hospitals and its North Carolina Basnight Cancer Hospital as one of the best in the nation — ranking the Chapel Hill facility 42 out of 175 hospitals on the list.
The hospital — which was renamed in the last year to honor former state senator Marc Basnight — is the clinical home of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, which is the only such center designated by the National Cancer Institute in North Carolina. The center has members from more than 40 departments across the university, including from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and more.
“Earning this national recognition by Newsweek is a testament to our team members’ commitment to provide the most advanced and compassionate cancer care that is guided by the latest research discoveries,” said UNC Hospitals President Janet Hadar in a release. “From our comprehensive care and support programs to the research we conduct in our laboratories, clinics and communities, we are providing our patients with the best possible cancer care close to where they live.”
Newsweek, which developed the ranking system with the research company Statista, based its list off three sources of data. One was a nationwide online survey of more than 2,000 hospital managers and health care professionals. The others are hospital quality metrics and patient experience data.
It’s not the first time this year that UNC Hospitals and the UNC Health system have landed into a Newsweek ranking. In March, the media brand said the Chapel Hill medical center ranked 89 in the United States, along with UNC Health Rex in Raleigh and UNC Health Johnston making the list of 2,300 hospitals. The U.S. News & World Report also recognized the Children’s Hospital at UNC last month, with the facility being ranked as the No. 2 children’s hospital in North Carolina and No. 4 in the southeast region. The honor marked the 15th consecutive year UNC Children’s Hospital has made the list.
