Two UNC Health hospitals are ranked top in the state in U.S. News and World Report’s 2023-24 “Best Hospitals” report released on Tuesday. UNC Hospitals is ranked 2nd and UNC Health Rex in Raleigh is ranked 4th best in the state.

In addition, three of UNC Hospitals’ specialties are nationally ranked. These include cancer, urology, and ear nose and throat. To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must be rated in the top 50 hospitals in the country for that category.

U.S. News recognized the top 22 hospitals and ranks for excellent care in 15 specialties This year, 164 hospitals in the country were ranked for at least one specialty. Over 5,000 hospitals are evaluated each year by U.S. News.

This recent ranking follows the CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) ranking of UNC Hospitals, UNC Health Rex, and Appalachian Regional as an impressive 5 stars.

The UNC Children’s Hospital ranked top ten nationally. The U.S. News ranked it 9th in pediatric specialties in June.

The U.S. News also rates hospitals as “high performing” this indicates that a hospital was outside of the top-50 ranking nationally but scored high for an adult specialty.

UNC Hospitals scored a high performing rating in Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, Geriatrics, and Pulmonology and Lunch Surgery.

Both UNC Hospitals and UNC Health Rex were rated high performing in Orthopedics, while only UNC Health Rex scored high performing for “Common Adult Procedure and Condition Ratings.”
