The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting at an intersection Wednesday morning that left one person injured.
A release from the office shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday said the incident happened around 11:40 a.m. at the intersection of Moore Mountain Road and Hamlets Chapel Road — which is near U.S. 15-501 and the Bynum community. According to investigators, a person got out of their car and fired gunshots into a car that had pulled up to the intersection. The sheriff’s office said the shots struck one person, who was transported from the scene by EMS.
An updated release on Thursday afternoon said the victim is a 17-year-old who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They have since been released from the hospital, according to a sheriff office spokesperson.

The release described the suspect as a Black male dressed in dark clothing and a black pullover hoodie. The sheriff’s office added he is approximately 6-feet tall, in his late 20s or early 30s, and has a goatee. The car the suspect exited before shooting into the victim’s vehicle was a white Mazda SUV and likely a “newer model.”
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said anyone who may have information about the shooting or location the suspect is encouraged to call its office directly at 919-542-2911.
