A 12-under par final round by the Tar Heels Tuesday helped the UNC men’s golf team win the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm City, FL. It’s Carolina’s fourth tournament win of the 2022-23 season, which is the most since 1997-98.
“Golf is challenging and you have to play the complete 54 holes to win,” said head coach Andrew DiBitetto, “especially when competing against so many of the best teams in the country… Today, our guys were exceptional, tough and earned a great win on a demanding golf course against a phenomenal field. We got back this week to our standard and how we compete.”
DiBitetto has guided Carolina to 14 team titles in his six seasons as head coach. The No. 4 Tar Heels used their final-round surge to leapfrog No. 3 Texas Tech, which had led by three strokes after the first two rounds of play on Monday. The Red Raiders and Tar Heels were two of a who’s who of elite programs competing at the tournament: No. 2 Arizona State, No. 7 Florida State, No. 10 Texas and No. 14 Texas A&M were also in attendance.
Dylan Menante shot a season-best 65 in the final round, and was joined under 70 by David Ford (68) and Ryan Burnett (69). Austin Greaser and Peter Fountain shot 70 and 72, respectively. Ford shot in the 60s in all three rounds (the first time he’s done so in a collegiate tournament) and finished with a 10-under 203, tied for second and just a stroke behind the individual champion. Ford has finished in the top 2 four times this season.
Carolina’s next scheduled tournament is The Calusa Cup in Naples, FL, which begins on Sunday.
