Pedestrians walking around Carrboro in the next month may run into some construction, as crews work to repair about 4,000 square feet of sidewalk along dozens of town streets.

The $75,000 public works project is partly to repair damaged sidewalk, but also to upgrade curb ramps to meet ADA standards.

“[It’s] essentially for accessibility,” Carrboro Mayor Damon Seils told 97.9 The Hill last week. “It’s going to improve sidewalk accessibility for folks, especially those with mobility impairments.”

Some of the work will take place downtown, along East Main Street, and there will also be work at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Most of the work, though, will be in neighborhoods, particularly on streets off Homestead and Hillsborough Roads in northern Carrboro.

“These are [locally-owned] streets, local sidewalks,” Seils said. “We are expecting at some point — I hope in the next year or two — to also see some similar repairs happening on sidewalks on state-owned roads in Carrboro.”

In addition to Martin Luther King Jr. Park and East Main Street, the repair project will involve two dozen other streets: Atterbury, N. Camellia, W. Winmore, S. Camellia, Kiley, Sharp, Jewell, Lucas, Della, Stratford, Tramore, Ellsworth, Autumn, Farm House, Sunset Creek, Rockgarden, Cates Farm, Bel Arbor, Long Meadows, Legends, N. Fields, Shadow Ridge, Hogan Woods, and Lake Ridge.

The sidewalk repair project is underway now; town officials say it’s expected to run through the end of January.
