Orange County, Chapel Hill and Carrboro will host two joint open house events to discuss the future of the Greene Tract next month.

The first event will be in-person at the Rogers Eubanks Neighborhood Association (RENA) Community Center on November 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The second event will be virtual on Monday, November 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Participants must register beforehand using this link. For those without internet access, phone options will be available.

The open house events will discuss the history of the Greene Tract, environmental assessment of the property, connectivity, future development, land use and next steps.

104 acres of the property is owned by all three local governments. The use of the 164-acre land has been debated since it was first purchased by the governments in 1984.

In April, an Interlocal Agreement was reached regarding the future of land use on the site.

Orange County independently owns the remaining 60-acre Headwaters Preserve on the site and has committed to its preservation.

Last year, the three boards voted that 66 acres of the land be used for housing and mixed use, 22 acres be preserved and 16 acres be used for a public school and a public recreational site.

“The Greene Tract is a place of immense historical, cultural and natural resources,” the Orange County government said in a release. “All three governmental entities are committed to a thoughtful and inclusive site planning process that respects the people and resources of the area, while reflecting the shared goal of increasing affordable housing for our community.”
