Offense was plentiful on Saturday night in Atlanta, but it was Georgia Tech that got the last laugh against the UNC baseball team–hitting a walk-off solo home run to win by a score of 10-9.
The Tar Heels (26-23, 18-17 ACC) fell behind 5-0 after the Yellow Jackets put five runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning.
Johnny Castognozzi then hit a two-run homer in the third inning for UNC, followed by RBIs from Danny Serretti and Brett Centracchio in the fourth to bring the Tar Heels within one run on the scoreboard.
Georgia Tech (27-21, 20-15 ACC) responded with three more runs in the home half of the fourth, making the score 8-4.
Again, though, the Tar Heels fought back valiantly as Caleb Roberts’ team-leading 10th home run of the season capped a three-run fifth inning and pulled the team back within one.
The Yellow Jackets hit a solo home run in the eighth to double their lead, but UNC tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to tie the score back up courtesy of Serretti and Angel Zarate.
Just five pitches into the bottom of the night, however, Georgia Tech’s Drew Compton hit the game-ending home run off UNC reliever Gage Gillian–good enough for the Yellow Jackets’ 17th hit of the night.
Up Next:
The series rubber match will begin on Sunday at 1 p.m. and serve as the regular season finale for both teams.
