The night after hitting a walk-off double to complete a wild rally in the 10th inning, UNC freshman Ashton McGee made sure the third-ranked Tar Heels wouldn’t need a repeat performance to pull off their eighth straight win.
McGee homered and tallied three RBIs on Wednesday, as UNC crushed UNC-Asheville at Boshamer Stadium by a score of 16-4.
The Tar Heels (39-9) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning–and ultimately extended the margin to 7-1 by the end of the fourth.
Brandon Riley and Brian Miller supplemented McGee’s offense with three hits apiece, as the Tar Heels put together 15 hits as a team–while drawing 10 walks on top of that.
For much of the season UNC has used a variety of different pitchers in its midweek games. That didn’t change on Wednesday, with Bo Weiss tossing the first three innings–but seven different pitchers seeing the mound altogether.
UNC-Asheville (19-27) did the bulk of its scoring in the later portion of the evening–scratching across two runs in the sixth frame and another in the seventh.
The Bulldogs had the tying run on base at one point in the seventh inning, but reliever Brett Daniels escaped the jam to keep UNC ahead.
Three runs in the home half of the seventh–followed by six more in the eighth–put the final nails in the coffin for the Tar Heels, who snapped a streak of five straight come-from-behind wins with their blowout win.
Up Next:
UNC will look to stay hot this weekend, when it travels to Blacksburg for a three-game series against Virginia Tech.
