Hosting the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday evening, the No. 6 UNC baseball team exploded for 10 runs in the fifth inning on the way to an 11-5 victory.

It was the eighth consecutive win for the Tar Heels (32-13), who have won 25 of their last 31 games overall.

After neither team scored over the first four innings, the Bulldogs struck first blood in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs on a two-run single by Joe Zayatz.

The visitors would hand the lead right back, however, as they used a combined five pitchers in the home half of the frame when seemingly none of them could throw the ball over the plate.

UNC drew seven walks in the inning, compared to just four hits–content to pile runs up four bad pitches at a time. Brandon Martorano’s two-run double represented the biggest hit of the night for the Tar Heels, while two other runs scored on a wild pitch and a hit batter.

From there, the Bulldogs added two more runs in the seventh on the strength of two doubles before Tar Heel first baseman Michael Busch drove in the final run of the night for the home side in the bottom of the inning.

UNC-Asheville scratched another run across the plate in the top of the ninth, but it was too little, too late. Workhorse reliever Brett Daniels then came into the game and tallied three straight strikeouts to seal the Tar Heel victory.
