Another former Tar Heel player has joined the new men’s basketball staff under head coach Hubert Davis, as it was reported Monday evening that Pat Sullivan will join the team in a support role.
Sullivan was teammates with Davis during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons, and is one of eight Tar Heels to ever play in three Final Fours — doing so in 1991, 1993 and 1995.
He began his coaching career as a video assistant for Dean Smith, doing that role for two seasons before serving as an assistant for three seasons under Bill Guthridge.
From there, Sullivan moved on to become an assistant women’s coach at UNCW–a job he held from 2001-03. Over the last 18 seasons, he’s worked at the NBA level in various capacities.
Jeff Goodman of Stadium had the initial report Sullivan would be returning to the Chapel Hill campus.
While a player at UNC, Sullivan made one of two free throws with 20 seconds remaining in the 1993 NCAA title game against Michigan. Wolverines’ forward Chris Webber then infamously tried to call a timeout despite his team no longer having any left, leading to a technical foul which effectively sealed the title for the Tar Heels.
Sullivan joins a staff under Davis which now consists of five former UNC players, including Jeff Lebo, Sean May, Jackie Manuel and Brad Frederick.
