The Houston Texans announced Tuesday that they have hired former UNC quarterback TJ Yates to their coaching staff as an offensive assistant.
Yates was previously a fifth-round draft choice by the Texans back in 2011, and spent parts of five seasons with the team–primarily as a backup. He last played during the 2017 campaign, starting three games for Houston following a torn ACL to starter Deshaun Watson.
Throughout the entirety of his playing career, Yates started 10 of the 22 games he played in and threw for a total of 2,057 yards and 10 touchdowns.
His best moment came during his rookie year in 2011, when he won a playoff game for the Texans against the Cincinnati Bengals during the AFC Wild Card round–becoming just the fifth rookie quarterback to start and win in the playoffs.
This will be his first NFL coaching position.
