In a rematch of one of last year’s NCAA College Cup Semifinals, the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers used a goal in the 87th minute by AJ Palazzolo to slip past third-ranked UNC by a score of 1-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary–the same score as when they eliminated the Tar Heels last December.
Five different players tallied at least two shots for the Tar Heels (1-1), who finished with 11 total for the game compared to just three for Indiana.
In the end, however, it was a set piece that spelled doom for UNC.
Palazzolo got his head on the end of a beautiful free kick in the Tar Heel defensive zone, one that ultimately slipped past goalkeeper James Pyle with time running out in regulation.
It was a devastating way to end a match that could easily have gone the other way and given UNC a signature victory early in the 2018 campaign.
