I-85 Reopens After Fatal Crash Near Orange-Durham Line

****UPDATE: Durham Police said 42-year-old Alexander Malykin, of Durham, was killed in the first crash on I-85. Malykin crashed his SUV into the back of a tractor-trailer, according to Durham Police. Both vehicles were traveling in the far-right lane. No charges have been filed at this time, and the crash remains under investigation.****

There have been two “serious” crashes, as described by Durham Police, on I-85 southbound Friday. Southbound traffic is now being diverted to US 15-501, police said after the second crash.

The initial delays were prompted by a crash near the Cole Mill Road exit approaching the Orange County line from Durham. That crash was reported shortly before noon and caused the closure of two of the three southbound I-85 travel lanes. Durham Police then said a second crash occurred around 1:45 p.m. Friday in the same stretch of the interstate.

North Carolina Department of Transportation officials now say that traffic is being detoured onto 15-501 south. Motorists can then exit to NC 147 and re-access I-85 south after the area affected by the collision.

There is no firm estimate as to when the interstate will be reopened fully or if there were any serious injuries as a result of the two crashes.
