In a tournament final between the top two teams in the ACC regular season standings, the No. 2 seed UNC women’s soccer team used a goal from Zoe Redei to upset the top-seeded Duke Blue Devils by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Charleston.
Redei capitalized on a rebound less than a minute into the second half to put the Tar Heels ahead, with the goal eventually delivering head coach Anson Dorrance’s legendary program its first ACC Tournament title since 2009.
UNC (15-2-2) finished with an 11-10 advantage in shots over Duke (19-2), which suffered just its second loss of the season.
The Blue Devils had won 19 consecutive games after losing their season opener to the Tar Heels back on Aug. 18.
After assisting on Redei’s game-winner and scoring the team’s only goal in the semifinal win over NC State, freshman forward Alessia Russo was named the ACC Tournament MVP.
Julia Ashley, Joanne Boyles, Dorian Bailey and Abby Elinsky also joined Russo as Tar Heels recognized on the All-Tournament team.
