Eva Van’t Hoog scored a goal just seconds into the first overtime period on Saturday afternoon, handing the seventh-ranked UNC field hockey team a 3-2 road win over the No. 6 Syracuse Orange.

Van’t Hoog’s tally provided a stunning finish to a game which had just seen Syracuse tie things up following its third consecutive penalty corner with no time left on the clock in regulation.

The ensuing deflection miraculously found the back of the net, and forced UNC into its second straight overtime game against a conference opponent.

It was also the second goal of the game for Van’t Hoog, who gave the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead with just over 18 minutes remaining in the second half.

Gab Major had previously put UNC (8-2, 2-1 ACC) on the board in the first half after deflecting in a shot from Ashley Hoffman, while Syracuse (8-2, 2-1 ACC) struggled to get its offense going until the final minutes.

The Orange found an immediate response to Van’t Hoog’s first goal, however, on a fastbreak opportunity–but needed until the last possible second to send the game into overtime.

Of course, Van’t Hoog had an immediate response of her own waiting in the extra period–and the rest is now history.

It marks the fifth win in a row for the Tar Heels, who appear to be playing as well as they have all year long after suffering through a bit of a slow start.
