UNC freshman Lucas del Rosario scored his second goal of the match in double overtime on Tuesday evening at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary–lifting the fourth-ranked Tar Heel men’s soccer team to an exciting 2-1 win over Old Dominion.
Although the Tar Heels (12-2-1) controlled possession for much of the night, Old Dominion (7-3-2) forced a turnover around midfield in the 53rd minute, which allowed Max Wilschrey to score the game’s first goal.
Old Dominion goalie Mertcan Akar played a huge role in the visitors’ upset bid as well–making a total of nine saves throughout the night.
After watching teammate Zach Wright hit the crossbar on two separate occasions while searching for the game-tying goal, del Rosario finally broke through for UNC in the 88th minute.
The freshman headed a pass from Jelani Pieters into the back of the net with time running out, which allowed the Tar Heels to find new life in overtime.
UNC came up just short of winning in the first extra period, but wasted no time finding paydirt in the second.
In the 102nd minute, Jeremy Kelly played a nice ball into del Rosario-who promptly slipped a ball past Akar for the game-winner.
It was the 23rd shot of the night for the Tar Heels, compared to just four for Old Dominion–a stat that illustrates the type of control UNC had over the match.
