In its first trip away from the friendly confines of Kenan Stadium this season, the 12th-ranked UNC men’s lacrosse went in to Baltimore and took a 13-11 victory Friday evening over the No. 14 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays.

Attacker Timmy Kelly scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter for the Tar Heels, who improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2015 with the win over one of the sport’s longtime powerhouse programs.

Kelly’s late offensive outburst helped UNC take the lead for the first time all game after the teams finished the third quarter tied 8-8.

All three goals came in a span of less than three minutes, and gave the Tar Heels a 12-9 cushion.

In addition to Kelly’s heroics, UNC also received four goals from Tanner Cook and two from senior Chris Cloutier.

William Perry, Justin Anderson and Andy Matthews added the other three goals for head coach Joe Breschi’s squad.

It was a hard-fought battle between a pair of teams who appeared to be evenly matched for most of the game. Johns Hopkins tallied 39 shots compared to 37 for UNC–while both teams committed 13 turnovers.

The clutch performance down the stretch from Kelly provided the only difference, as the Tar Heels continue to find ways to win when it matters most–having previously won back-to-back games in overtime over the last two weeks.
