Playing in extremely muddy conditions Saturday afternoon at Kenan Stadium, the UNC men’s lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the 2019 season–going down by a score of 11-10 against the visiting Johns Hopkins Blue Jays.
UNC fell to 3-1 this year with the loss, while Johns Hopkins improved to 1-2.
It was a back-and-forth game that saw the Tar Heels rally back from a 3-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead at halftime. From there, the Blue Jays rallied to take an 11-8 lead late in the game before UNC scored the game’s final two goals.
Ara Atayan led the Tar Heels with three goals on the day–good enough for his first career hat trick–while seven other UNC players scored once.
Both sides won 12 face-offs apiece and Johns Hopkins only outshot the Tar Heels by a margin of 36-35–illustrating just how evenly matched these teams were given the sloppy conditions on the field.
