UNC sophomore catcher Cody Roberts had his name added to the Watch List for the Johnny Bench Award on Friday–an honor given annually to the top Division I catcher in America.

Sponsored by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, the award added Roberts and nine other catchers to a list of nominees that runs 107 players deep.

After starting 52 games behind the plate as a true freshman last season, the native of Johns Creek, Georgia has started all but four of UNC’s 36 games this year.

During that time, Roberts has posted a .313 batting average–good enough for third on the team–while recording just four errors in the field.

The list of nominees for the award still has the potential to grow until May 1, when semifinalists are announced.

A national voting panel will cast their ballots at the end of the month to determine the three finalists–with a final vote occurring at the College World Series in June.

The winner will be announced in Wichita on June 29, at the 20th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet.
