At halftime of UNC’s home basketball game against Virginia Tech on Jan. 26, former UNC baseball great Dustin Ackley will become just the fourth player in program history to have his number retired.

Dave Lemonds, B.J. Surhoff and Andrew Miller are currently the only other Tar Heel baseball players to receive the honor.

Ackley’s No. 13 will be recognized during a ceremony that will highlight some of the amazing accomplishments he put together during his time in Chapel Hill.

He took home the National Player of the Year award in 2009 after a campaign that saw hit .417 with 22 home runs. The native of Walnut Cove, North Carolina is also the only three-time All-American in school history.

The Seattle Mariners chose him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, and he has spent time there and in New York as a member of the Yankees during his pro career.
