In the midst of one of the best seasons in program history, the UNC volleyball team was recognized on Monday by earning seven All-ACC recognitions.

Redshirt sophomore Taylor Leath took home the league’s Player of the Year award, while freshman outside hitter Julia Scoles was named the ACC Freshman of the Year.

The awards are voted on by the conference’s 15 head coaches, which makes it all the more special for that UNC’s Joe Sagula was honored as ACC Coach of the Year for the fifth time.

Fifth-year senior Taylor Treacy joined Leath and Scoles to give UNC three members of the All-ACC First Team.

Taylor Fricano and Abigail Curry each were selected to the All-ACC Second Team. Taylor Borup rounded out the selections with a place on the All-Freshman Team.

It’s the first time UNC has garnered both the league’s Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year trophies in the same season since 1989, while the five All-ACC First and Second Team selections are also a program record.

“It’s been all about the team,” Sagula said of his players. “It’s great individual recognition, but I will tell you that every one of these players will point to the other players. That’s the kind of teammates they are, that they would say the reason for their success is because of their teammates. I’m just proud of them for that mentality and that mindset going forward into the NCAA’s.”

The Tar Heels (27-3) were just named the No. 7 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday after recently being crowned ACC Champions for the seventh time under Sagula’s leadership.

They’ll begin their quest for a national championship on Friday, Dec. 2 with a first-round match at home against High Point.
