Seriously, how lucky are we to have Mack Brown as our football coach?
You’ve heard me say it before, but Brown continues to amaze. He holds two Zoom press conferences a week; is there another coach in the country who does that?
Ross Martin, of Inside Carolina, gleaned 10 take-aways from Brown’s Wednesday presser — everything from preparation for Saturday’s HUGE game against Virginia Tech, to realistic expectations for the 2020 team, to COVID adjustments to, yes, politics and voting.
Brown claims to be apolitical, telling the story that when President Clinton came to Chapel Hill in 1993, Brown had to check with his wife Sally if Clinton was a Dem or Republican. But Mack goes over just how much effort he has put into his players having a chance to vote from getting them registered to filling out their ballots.
Meanwhile, Dabo Swinney is bitching that the NCAA has mandated no practice on November 3. Sheesh.
Brown hints at what many fans think. The Tar Heels may turn out to be a conference contender, or even champion, this season, but the big payoff may really come in 2021. He has a second-straight bananas recruiting class on the way, the youngsters taking the field today will be grizzled veterans tomorrow and, whatever happens to ACC alignment, Trevor Lawrence will be off to the NFL next fall.
And in his way of saying it, Brown warns that Virginia Tech is clearly a winnable game but not with how the Heels have played inconsistently in their first two games. Two much impatience on offense, trying to score quickly when defenses are more scouted-up on Sam Howell and UNC’s other offensive weapons.
Plus, the Hokies have more experience and depth, ironically, developed by so many players sitting out of their first two games and likely being at full strength Saturday. Virginia Tech has the slight advantage on both interior lines, and Mack acknowledges the rivalry between the programs has become fierce and contentious.
But, oh, what a win it would be if they can pull it off before 3,250 fans!

Chansky's Notebook: Goals and AmbitionsGarrison Brooks has both opportunity and pressure. On paper, the ACC looks as weak as it has been in some time due to widespread losses to graduation and early departures to the NBA, and no sure-shot superstars in the incoming recruiting classes. A beneficiary of this development is Brooks, the Carolina senior who was second-team All-ACC last year and earned the league’s […]

Chansky's Notebook: Kudos To CarolinaUNC teams did a commendable job beating the odds. Who among us thought the ACC would be playing football and other fall sports last summer? Chansky's Notebook: Extra MotivationCarolina’s schedule could be working to its advantage. When the COVID-revised list of games came out, it looked troublesome for the Tar Heels with Virginia Tech and Florida State basically bookending Notre Dame and Miami with four rivalry games in a row right in the middle. Coaches usually don’t like that because it takes a […]
