Friday is one of the first deadlines for prospective North Carolina voters in this 2020 general election.

Those who have yet to register to vote through online or mail-in methods have until the end of Friday to submit their requests. State laws say any mail-in request for registration or to request an absentee ballot must be postmarked on October 9 to be valid for this election cycle.

For those who miss the Friday deadline to register and still want to participate in the election, another option is available. In-person registration will be available at early voting sites in North Carolina once they open on Thursday, October 15. In addition to registering, North Carolinians can then cast their ballots on the same day. Early voting does not require you to vote in your specific precinct.

Registration in-person at early voting sites will end in North Carolina on Saturday, October 31.

There have been many efforts across the state and country to register voters for this year’s election. In Chapel Hill, UNC head coaches Roy Williams and Mack Brown teamed up with Yahoo Sports in September to publish a video encouraging North Carolinians to register and sharing steps on how to. Locally, the state Board of Elections reported Friday morning there are 111,067 registered voters in Orange County and 56,482 registered in Chatham County.

In addition, absentee ballot requests have seen an increase this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with more than 1.25 million absentee ballots requested North Carolina so far.

People who are Division of Motor Vehicles customers can register on the Department of Transportation’s website.
