Roy Lunsford of McDougle Middle and Elementary Schools in Carrboro has been nominated by Safe Kids Orange County and the Carrboro Police Department to be recognized in the national ‘America’s Favorite Crossing Guard’ competition.

The goal of this annual competition is to celebrate the important role crossing guards play in keeping school zones safe for students and families.

“The Carrboro Police Community Services Division whole heartedly endorses and recommends, Roy Lunsford for the crossing guard competition,” said Sgt. Brent Hobby of Carrboro Police Department in a release. “He is the most dedicated and friendly crossing guard I have ever had the privilege of working with.

“He has an excellent rapport with all of the students and parents who use the crosswalk at McDougle. Roy does an excellent job of keeping folks safe and brightens everyone’s day who he comes in contact with his positive , outgoing and friendly attitude. He probably holds an unofficial world record for high fives also.”

The winner of the competition will receive a $10,000 safety grant for their school.
