On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending the process of separating children from their families after they are detained for crossing the U.S. border illegally.
The administration’s previous position was that the government had no choice but to separate children from families because of federal law and a court decision. The news cycle in recent days has been flooded with images of crying children being taken from their parents as well as children held in cages at border facilities.
Aaron Keck was able to speak with Lynn Calder, an immigration attorney with Allen & Pinnix, P.A. in Raleigh, to shed some light on the subject of immigration law and the legal process involved with separating children at the border. Calder comes with over 20 years of immigration law experience and has represented clients in all areas of naturalization matters. She is also an adjunct professor at UNC with the School of Law on its immigration clinic.
