Among the bands on the Sleepy Fest lineup is Kill the Buddha, a Greensboro quintet led by Lenwood Edwards Jr. that just released a self-titled album in August.
“The name (Kill the Buddha) is inspired from a Buddhist koan,” Edwards explains. “My understanding is (that) it just means to stay teachable: one of the core principles of Buddhism is being present, being in the moment. Teachers used to tell their students, ‘if you see the Buddha, kill the Buddha’ – just to not stay fixed on a certain idea. (And) it’s kind of a call to myself to be present when I’m playing also.”

Kill the Buddha will be Sleepy Fest’s opening band inside the Haw River Ballroom; their set begins at 1:00 p.m. Edwards says this will be their first time performing in that iconic venue – and it’s especially exciting because it gives them the chance to work with the folks at Sleepy Cat Records.

“I had talked (in the past) with some of the folks at Sleepy Cat, Saman (Khoujinian) and Gabe (Anderson), and we had some talks of making stuff happen – but the way this worked out was just too good of a deal to be true,” he says. “The bubble that they’ve built here in the Triangle is really neat, and we’re glad to be a part of it.”
Lenwood Edwards Jr. stopped by Live & Local to promote Sleepy Fest and play three songs: “Mikey,” “Bloom,” and “Mr. G.” Listen:
