A hallmark of Chapelboro living, patronizing local businesses is a simple way of showing support for local entrepreneurs. Here’s this week’s new business round-up, with a few new storefronts worth taking a look at.

Bell Tree Speakeasy

Located at 100 Brewer Lane in Carrboro, the Bell Tree Speakeasy pays respect to olden days with a Prohibition-era atmosphere open to influences from modern cocktail culture. A simple door set in a brick wall leads directly into a low-lit bar tended by dapper-dressed staff. The menu may not be expansive, but the craft behind the cocktails indicates that your bartender can certainly accommodate you if you wish to order off the beaten path.

The Bullpen

A cooperative project between Bull Durham Beer Co. and Heavenly Buffaloes, The Bullpen is a welcome addition to Durham’s beer garden scene. Regular live music organized by the Music Maker Relief Foundation provides entertainment and $1 from every pint sold goes to benefit the foundation. Open year-round, good news to fans of Bull Durham Beer Co., the establishment serves beer previously only available during games at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Living Kitchen

Slated to open in Chapel Hill in early 2017, Living Kitchen already has locations in Charlotte and Raleigh. With a mostly-raw menu featuring organic and plant-based concepts, Living Kitchen presents food as not only nourishment but as an art form. The Chapel Hill location will be located at 201 South Elliot Road, next to the Village Plaza shopping center.

Guglhupf

Opening up a new location in Chapel Hill, the famed Guglhupf bakery will be opening a new location in Eastgate Crossing. Since 1998, the Guglhupf name has garnered well-deserved attention for its fine food and exceptionally crafted baked goods.

Gimghoul Brewing and Bottle Co & Atlas Taco Bar

Named after the famous Chapel Hill landmark, Gimghoul Brewing and Bottle Co will be opening up alongside ACME’s offshoot Atlas Taco Bar in the upcoming South Green shopping center. Both businesses have yet to release full details of what will be available, but the offerings from each promise to continue the trend of making Chapelboro a go-to spot for fine food and drink that is locally owned, operated, and enjoyed.

Old Town Books

Opening on King Street in Hillsborough in early November, Old Town Books has taken the spot formerly occupied by Cup-A-Joe and occupied it with thousands of books packed in a charming storefront. Proprietor Steven Wade has a Bachelor’s degree in history and a Master’s in library science, and works hard to keep his shelves organized and customers engaged.

Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill

An upscale steakhouse experience stemming from Nashville-based J. Alexander’s, the Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill will be taking up residence in University Place, next to Silverspot Cinema. Focusing on choice cuts of steak and fresh seafood selections, the Stoney River Steakhouse is poised to compete with the similarly upscale-leaning Trilogy next door.
