A quick-growing cookie chain known for its viral social media campaigns and pink boxes is set to open in downtown Chapel Hill.

After owning the space for more than a year and experiencing a handful of delays, Crumbl Cookies announced it is holding a grand opening of its new West Franklin Street location on Friday, February 10.

“We have been planning and looking forward to this store opening for quite awhile,” co-owner Craig Church told Chapelboro in January. “We joined the Chapel Hill Area Chamber a few months ago, and have started partnerships with the UNC Athletics department. We love being able to support local schools and businesses as well, and plan to reach out to different groups to work with them in fundraisers and different activities to benefit them.”

Along with Church, his wife Rebecca, friends Josh Watson, Brian Church, Russ Church and Corbin Linde are listed as co-owners of the Chapel Hill franchise.

The store is in Suite 150 at 133 West Franklin Street — part of the Carolina Square development that includes student apartments and the Target store. The space was previously home to ivy & leo, a boutique clothing store, and sits between the Alumni Hall UNC store and the Arrow barber shop.

The Crumbl Cookies brand began in Utah in 2017 and has grown to have more than 600 locations in the United States. Its claim-to-fame is having “the world’s best chocolate chip cookie” and a line-up of cookie flavors that rotate each week — meaning customers rarely get the same batch of recipes each visit.

Presently, North Carolina has several Crumbl franchises, including a handful in the Triangle. Until the Chapel Hill location opens, the closest for the community to visit is at the Southpoint mall in south Durham.

Church said he and the other owners are excited to bring those offerings to the Franklin Street business scene.

“Everyone we have worked with in Chapel Hill has been so kind and welcoming,” Church added. “We love being able to see the excitement our cookies bring to the community. Our goal is to bring friends and families together around the best box of cookies in the world, and the best part of being able to be a part of Crumbl is seeing that happen!”

The Chapel Hill Crumbl Cookies will be open from 8 a.m. through 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. through 12 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The chains close on Sundays to prepare for the following week’s next lineup of flavor options. The local store said in its grand opening release that its online order, delivery, curbside pickup and catering services will not be operational until Wednesday, February 15.
